On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 39 - PA, MD & VA

Sunday, November 8

Gettysburg, PA

We had a long driving day today in order to reach Lynchburg, VA by evening.

We did make a brief stop in Gettysburg, but had to promise ourselves to return at a later date when we had more time to explore this history rich town, the site of The Battle of Gettysburg in July, 1863 and President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address later that same year in November, 1863.

We sat in on a rustic church service presented by the U.S. Christian Commission reenacting how Christian soldiers worshipped during the Civil War.

The Christian Commission is a center for study and interpretation of the religious history of the war between the states.  These studies include the role of faith in the life of the Civil War soldier and sailor and those that served the cause of Christ during the war.

Then we drove through the battlefields...

Emmitsburg, MD

Soon after we entered the Blue Ridge Mountain region, we stopped briefly to visit the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, the oldest known replica of the revered French shrine.

Virginia

A quick peek and a quick bite to eat in Leesburg, VA.

Virginia Highways & Byways...

We arrived in Lynchburg by dusk.

Mad Men episode centering on JFK assassination tonight.

All in all, a very reflective day...
