On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 34 - Upstate NY

Tuesday, November 3

A Stop In The Catskills and then On The Way To Pennsylvania

With warm hugs of gratitude, we thanked Kirk and Harriet for a perfect B&B experience.

Once on the road, we found ourselves in the midst of dairy country....

and then

Catskills Country

The Colonial Inn
Main Street
Pine Hill, NY

In the mid-1970's, my parents purchased this Inn in the heart of the Catskills.  For two years, Dad worked hard renovating inside and out and Mom learned the business of running an inn, with all that that entails.  The grand opening was in the summer of 1977 and for the next decade they opened their inn and their hearts to travelers visiting the area for skiing, hunting and just to escape the city in the summertime.  For a couple of years, I had the distinct privilege of working weekends at the Colonial Inn.  On Friday evenings, I would leave my job at Eurotop Tours (a travel agency specializing in adventure trips to Scandinavia) located on Long Island for an enjoyable drive to the mountains (The Marshall Tucker Band blaring the whole way).  In the winter after guests checked out on Sunday at noon, I was able to then scoot up to Belleayre Mountain and make a couple of ski runs before I hopped in my car and returned back to the island for work on Monday morning.

Although the Inn was sold years back, we still feel a real connection to the place.  Anytime we are in the area, we stop by and today was no exception.

The bar was all abuzz at the Colonial Inn.
A group of young New York filmmakers (from the production company, Glass Eye Pix) had been scouting the area for locations and they had just chosen the Inn for one of the scenes in their upcoming movie, Stake Land, to be shot in this area of upstate New York.  I'll pass, I think it's one of those horrifically scary vampire movies!!

Usually when we come to Pine Hill, we stop at the Broadway Diner in Kingston, but today we needed to haul, so we headed for Cohen's Deli in downtown Monticello.

Not even two minutes after we added this sign to our collection, we came around a bend in the road and right smack dab in the middle of it stood a statuesque buck.  I grabbed for the camera, but too late.  He leaped into the woods.  I snapped as quick as I could.

If you look very closely you can see him behind the tree.

Moving on, we came across a few more vintage theatres for the collection....

This one was right across the street from where we had lunch at Cohen's Deli.

With no reservation for tonight, we drove with the moon accompanying us into Stroudsburg, PA where we easily found a room and slept soundly until the next morning
