On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 31 - Saratoga Springs, NY

Saturday, October 31
Happy Halloween!!

Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs, in beautiful upstate New York, takes its name from the county in which it resides and from the presence of natural springs.  Natives refer to it fondly as "The Queen of Spas Town."

Denis found us the cutest B&B for our stay here.  The Brunswick Inn, in the Historic District, was across from the Thoroughbred Race Track and a short walk to Downtown Saratoga.

Our room was cute and cozy.

First things first, a morning walk to get familiar with our new neighborhood.

That afternoon we went our separate ways to explore all that Saratoga Springs offered to the artists within us.

Denis headed over to the racetracks, eager to try his hand at capturing the essence of the equine life.

And for me, The National Museum of Dance.

The National Museum of Dance occupies the former Washington Bath House, a spacious historic Arts and Crafts style building from 1918.  All of the exhibits within the museum celebrate the art of dance, some of which are:  On Broadway:  The Evolution of Dance on the Broadway Stage; Ballet Russes:  celebrating the centennial of Serge Diaghilev's ballet company and The C.V. Whitney Hall of Fame:  which pays tribute to more that a century of dance pioneers whose collective works created American Dance.

Of special interest to me that day was the Hall of Fame tribute to Tommy Tune, the 2009 inductee.  Over one dozen pairs of Tune's dance shoes are displayed in this exhibit.

To ponder on....

And from the man himself...

While visiting the museum's gift shop, I purchased two new additions for my tap dance library.

Happy Feet - a children's story book about a little boy whose birthday was the same day that the Savoy Ballroom opened its doors in March, 1926.  "It was the day the doors swung open on the earth's hottest, coolest, most magnificent, superdeluxe dancing palace.  The Savoy!"
and
Brotherhood in Rhythm - The Jazz Tap Dancing of the Nicholas Brothers.

All the while, Denis had been busy....

Denis had found a traditional pub and tea house in the Arts District.  We stopped in to The Local for a late lunch.

The Local all decked out for Halloween.

We both had a personal pot of their African Elixir -  an organic tea with hints of vanilla and honey.

Denis chose the Veggie Burger featuring grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella and drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette.
For me, I just had to have the Bubble & Squeek.
This savory concoction made with homemade mashed potatoes mixed with braised cabbage and topped with melted cheddar cheese was comfort food to the max!!

Later, we stepped out into the drizzly evening and found ourselves at Mrs. London's Bakery & Cafe on Broadway.  There, in honor of Halloween, we shared a slice of Pumpkin Pie.  Espresso for Denis; Green Tea for me.

Trick for Treat?

With darkness looming, a constant drizzle, and the occasional rubbing of eyeballs with teens in creepy costumes, our walk back to The Brunswick via side streets and some back alleys was nothing less than Jekyll and Hydish!

Sleep tight Ghost & Goblins....
