On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 17 - Long Island

Saturday, October 17

Longuyland

This morning, Denis set up his latte station on Gloria's kitchen counter.  After our caffeine needs were met, Gloria and I chose real, New York style bagels for our breakfast, while Denis enjoyed his all time favorite, oatmeal.

It was a little overcast, so we grabbed our umbrellas and some bottled water and set out for a day trip to Port Jefferson.  It would be 25A eastbound again for us.  Just as beautiful as it is bringing you into the town of Huntington, so it continues for the length of the island.  We meandered all the way, checking out some of the little waterfront towns that we passed.

We came across this little theatre with its flashy marquee.

When we arrived in Port Jeff, Denis was taken in by its harbor.  Back in the day, this small ship building community was called Drowned Harbor.  The community leaders took it upon themselves to change the name to something more suitable to attract more business.  In honor of Thomas Jefferson, it was renamed Port Jefferson.

We popped in to The Catch Seafood Tavern on West Broadway for lunch.

Dry Martinis for us and a White Russian for Glor.
Take note of the little blue house in the background....

There was not one vegetarian item on the menu!!
The chef made wonderful grilled cheese & tomato on ciabatta just for us.
Steak fries as big as your head and a fresh green salad completed this nice lunch.
Lobster Roll for Glor.

Gloria and I left Denis to his sketching and we went  to check out all of the cute little shops.

At You, Me & Tea, I found a lovely tea strainer very much like the one my mother had when I was a child.

And at Once Upon A Christmas I found the ornament that would remind me of these Long Island days.

All the while, Denis was back at The Catch.  When we returned, we found that he had captured the view from our table...

An October Saturday in Port Jeff

Denis

As we left the charming little town of Port Jefferson, we caught sight of this adorable tug boat.  Maybe we'll see it some day in one of Denis' paintings.

Later that night, back home at Gloria's house, we all settled in for a marathon television watching session.  We caught up on all of our shows and went to bed knowing that tomorrow would be another fun Long Island day.

  1. I've been on that street in Port Jeff. And the interior of the shop looks familiar. Beautiful sketch, Denis.
